2019 Lagos Open: Timibra romps into main draw
NATIONAL junior sensation Godgift Timibra has worked his way into the main draw of the second leg after recording an unbeaten record in the qualifying round concluded yesterday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
Earlier, Timibra was stopped from making it to the main draw of the first leg by experienced Sylvester Emmanuel but he put up a spirited effort to edge out Ghana’s Andrew Appiah in the final qualifying match.
In an encounter that last for one hour, Timibra took charge from the start to end the stay of the Ghanaian in Lagos. The first set was easy for the youngster as he won 6-1 but the Ghanaian put up a spirited effort in the second leg. Knowing what was at stake, Timibra again dominated to win at 6-3.
But Emmanuel still booked his place in the main draw at the expense of his compatriot Gabriel Friday retired in the second set after losing 6-1 in the first set.
Meanwhile, Ronke Akingbade who failed to progress to the main draw in the first leg defeated teenager Oiza Josephine Yakubu 7-6(1), 6-1 to sail to the first round of the women’s singles.
But Nigerian like Patience Onebamhoni, Aanu Aiyegbusi, Sabath Ibrahim, Sarah Adegoke, Omolade Aderemi, Amala Nwokolo, Rachel Olamide Adunoye, Albert Bisong Bikom and Wilson Oswalele Igbinovia failed to advance to the main draw of the competition.
